A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure designed to address a diseased knee joint by replacing it with artificial materials. This procedure involves removing the end of the femur bone and replacing it with a metal shell. The end of the tibia bone is also replaced with a channeled plastic piece along with a metal stem. Depending on the condition of the kneecap, a plastic “button” may be added under the kneecap surface. The artificial components used in a total knee replacement are collectively referred to as the prosthesis.
A total hip replacement is a surgical intervention aimed at replacing the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint with artificial materials. The normal hip joint, a ball and socket joint, involves the acetabulum (cup-shaped component of the pelvis) and the head of the femur (thighbone). The procedure includes the surgical removal of the diseased ball and socket, replacing them with a metallic or ceramic ball and stem inserted into the femur bone and an artificial plastic or ceramic cup socket. The metallic artificial ball and stem are referred to as the “femoral prosthesis,” and the plastic cup socket is the “acetabular prosthesis.”
